Government Measures
Palmyra Protection Drive: The Tamil Nadu government has introduced strict measures to protect the Palmyra tree, the State tree since June 1988. Any cutting of palmyra trees under unavoidable circumstances requires prior permission through the Uzhavan (Farmer) mobile application. The policy ensures that for every tree cut, 10 saplings will be planted, reinforcing sustainable conservation efforts.
Static GK fact: Palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer) is traditionally used for toddy, jaggery, and leaves in crafts, making it economically important in Tamil Nadu.
Legal Framework
In 2021, the agriculture minister of Tamil Nadu emphasized that cutting palmyra trees without permission is strictly prohibited. This legal safeguard aims to curb unregulated felling and protect biodiversity. The rule applies to farmers, industries, and individuals seeking to use the trees for commercial or personal purposes.
Tree Statistics
According to the Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board, Tamil Nadu had approximately 5 crore palmyra trees as of 2019–2020. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University estimates about 10 crore palmyra trees across India, with Tamil Nadu alone hosting half of them. These figures highlight the State’s responsibility in conserving this significant species.
Static GK Tip: Tamil Nadu is the leading State in India in palmyra tree population, accounting for nearly 50% of the national count.
Conservation Mission
The Tamil Nadu government has been running a dedicated mission to protect the Palmyra tree for the past three years. This initiative includes awareness campaigns, replantation drives, and monitoring of tree-cutting activities. The approach combines community participation and technological enforcement through the Uzhavan app.
Static GK fact: The palmyra tree can live for more than 100 years, offering long-term environmental and economic benefits.
Environmental and Economic Significance
Palmyra trees contribute to soil conservation, carbon sequestration, and provide livelihoods through products like toddy, jaggery, and handicrafts. Protecting this species aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader environmental goals and rural development strategies.
Static GK Tip: In addition to Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala also have significant palmyra tree populations, but Tamil Nadu remains the center of commercial use.
Community Engagement
Farmers and local communities play a critical role in protecting the palmyra tree. The government encourages reporting illegal felling and participating in plantation drives. The combination of technology, law, and community involvement ensures the long-term survival of the State tree.
