Pakyong Airport Renaming Honours Freedom Fighter Trilochan Pokhrel: The Government of Sikkim announced the renaming of Pakyong Airport after freedom fighter Trilochan Pokhrel. The declaration was made by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on 27 February 2026 during the 31st Foundation Day celebration of the Akhil Sikkim Khas Chettri Bahun Kalyan Sangh held at Rangpo.

The airport will be officially known as Trilochan Pokhrel Airport. The decision aims to recognise the contributions of Trilochan Pokhrel, popularly remembered as “Gandhi Pokhrel,” for his role in spreading nationalist ideas in Sikkim during the Indian freedom struggle.

Legacy of Trilochan Pokhrel

Trilochan Pokhrel is widely regarded as Sikkim’s first freedom activist who connected the region with the larger Indian independence movement. Influenced strongly by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, he promoted non-violent resistance and national unity.

He actively participated in several landmark movements of the freedom struggle. These included the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–1922), the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930–1934), and the historic Quit India Movement of 1942.
