Industrial Accident in Maharashtra
Oleum Gas Leak Sparks Emergency Evacuation in Palghar: A hazardous oleum gas leak at a chemical manufacturing facility in Boisar MIDC industrial area of Palghar district, Maharashtra, triggered panic and led to a large-scale evacuation. The incident occurred at a unit operated by Bhageria Industries Ltd, located near the Tarapur industrial zone, one of the largest industrial belts near Mumbai.
Strong winds carried dense white fumes across surrounding areas within a five-kilometre radius, raising serious concerns about public safety. District authorities immediately activated emergency protocols under the district disaster management plan.
Static GK fact: Palghar district was carved out of Thane district in 2014, making it one of the newer districts in Maharashtra.
Cause of the Chemical Leak
The leak reportedly occurred around 2 pm from a 2,500-litre oleum day tank inside the chemical plant. Oleum, also known as fuming sulphuric acid, is a highly corrosive chemical widely used in fertilizer production, dye manufacturing, and petrochemical processes.
When released into the atmosphere, oleum produces thick sulphuric fumes, which can cause severe respiratory irritation and eye damage if inhaled. The strong wind conditions caused the gas cloud to spread rapidly across nearby industrial and residential zones.
Static GK Tip: Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) is considered one of the most important industrial chemicals globally and is often referred to as the “king of chemicals.”
Large-Scale Evacuation Measures
Authorities ordered the evacuation of over 2,600 people as a precautionary measure. Nearly 1,600 students from Tarapur Vidyamandir School, located close to the affected industrial zone, were moved to safer areas.
In addition, more than 1,000 workers from Bhageria Industries and neighbouring factories were evacuated. Officials stated that the evacuation was necessary because wind direction increased the spread of fumes, potentially exposing residents and workers to harmful chemical vapours.
Static GK fact: The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is a government body responsible for establishing and managing industrial estates across Maharashtra.
Emergency Response and Containment
Specialised rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and the local fire brigade were immediately deployed. Initial operations were difficult due to low visibility and high gas concentration around the leak site.
Emergency responders used self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to safely approach the affected tank. The leak was eventually controlled by placing sandbags around the tank, which helped suppress the release of fumes and stabilize the situation.
Static GK fact: The NDRF was established in 2006 under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to handle natural and industrial disasters across India.
Health Impact and Administrative Advisory
Authorities reported that three individuals experienced mild eye irritation due to exposure to the fumes. They received prompt medical attention and were discharged after treatment.
Palghar District Collector Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed that the situation was under continuous monitoring with support from multiple agencies. Residents were advised to stay indoors, avoid panic, and follow official instructions until the area was declared completely safe.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of industrial safety regulations, disaster preparedness, and chemical risk management in densely populated industrial zones.
