Oleum Gas Leak Sparks Emergency Evacuation in Palghar: A hazardous oleum gas leak at a chemical manufacturing facility in Boisar MIDC industrial area of Palghar district, Maharashtra, triggered panic and led to a large-scale evacuation. The incident occurred at a unit operated by Bhageria Industries Ltd, located near the Tarapur industrial zone, one of the largest industrial belts near Mumbai.

Cause of the Chemical Leak

The leak reportedly occurred around 2 pm from a 2,500-litre oleum day tank inside the chemical plant. Oleum, also known as fuming sulphuric acid, is a highly corrosive chemical widely used in fertilizer production, dye manufacturing, and petrochemical processes.

When released into the atmosphere, oleum produces thick sulphuric fumes, which can cause severe respiratory irritation and eye damage if inhaled. The strong wind conditions caused the gas cloud to spread rapidly across nearby industrial and residential zones.
