NITI Aayog and UNICEF Partnership for Aspirational District Transformation

Partnership for nutrition and health improvement

NITI Aayog and UNICEF Partnership for Aspirational District Transformation: NITI Aayog and UNICEF India recently signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) to improve nutrition and health outcomes in Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks across India. The agreement aims to strengthen maternal and child health systems in underserved regions where development indicators remain low.

The collaboration was signed by Rohit Kumar, Mission Director of the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme, and Arjan de Wagt, Deputy Representative of UNICEF India. The partnership seeks to improve nutrition awareness, strengthen healthcare delivery and promote coordinated action among government institutions, private companies and local communities.

Strengthening the Aspirational Districts Programme

The Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, launched in 2018 to accelerate development in the country’s most underdeveloped districts. The programme uses data-driven governance, convergence of schemes and competitive federalism to improve district-level performance.

The NITI Aayog–UNICEF partnership will reinforce these principles by improving the last-mile delivery of nutrition and health services. Special attention will be given to maternal nutrition, child growth monitoring and community awareness programmes in remote districts.

Static GK fact: The Aspirational Districts Programme initially covered 112 districts across India, selected based on low performance in key socio-economic indicators.

Role of IMPAct4Nutrition platform

As part of the partnership, UNICEF will leverage its IMPAct4Nutrition (I4N) platform. This initiative connects businesses, industry associations and public sector enterprises to support nutrition programmes.

Through this platform, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds will be directed towards projects that improve nutrition infrastructure, awareness campaigns and community health programmes. This approach aims to create a stronger link between public policy initiatives and private sector participation.

Static GK Tip: Under the Companies Act, 2013, certain companies in India are required to spend 2% of their average net profits on CSR activities.

Focus on Anganwadi and frontline workers

A major focus of the collaboration will be improving Anganwadi infrastructure and services. Anganwadi centres play a vital role in delivering nutrition supplements, early childhood care and health awareness programmes.

The initiative will also strengthen the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme by increasing its reach and effectiveness. Training programmes will be conducted for Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers and health staff to improve service delivery and community engagement.

Static GK fact: The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme was launched in 1975 and is one of the world’s largest programmes for early childhood care and development.

Community participation and sustainable outcomes

The partnership emphasizes community participation and awareness generation to improve nutrition practices among families. Mothers and caregivers will receive education on balanced diets, breastfeeding practices and child health monitoring.

In addition, the collaboration will encourage knowledge sharing platforms to spread successful models across different districts. These efforts aim to create scalable solutions that can improve maternal health, child nutrition and public health infrastructure in India’s most underserved regions.

Static GK Tip: NITI Aayog, established in 2015, replaced the Planning Commission and serves as India’s premier policy think tank.
