Rising Conservation Focus
Nilgiri Tahr Conservation and Interpretation Efforts: Tamil Nadu has increased its attention on protecting the Nilgiri Tahr, one of India’s most iconic mountain species. The State’s recent steps highlight an effort to strengthen ecological awareness and improve population monitoring.
Static GK fact: The Nilgiri Tahr is the State Animal of Tamil Nadu.
Interpretation Centre Initiatives
A dedicated Nilgiris Tahr Interpretation Centre is being set up at Gandhi Puram, close to Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore. This centre aims to improve public understanding of the animal’s habitat and ecological importance. It will also act as a hub for research-based outreach.
Population Growth Trends
The recent population surveys show a significant rise in Nilgiri Tahr numbers. Tamil Nadu recorded 1,031 individuals last year across 13 routes and 140 locations. This year, the survey expanded to 14 habitats and 175 locations, noting 1,303 Nilgiri Tahr, an increase of 272.
Key Habitat Concentrations
The Anamalai Grass Hills continue to record the highest number of Nilgiri Tahr in Tamil Nadu with 334 individuals. These high-altitude grasslands form a crucial habitat for the species.
Static GK Tip: The Anamalai Hills are part of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Regional Population Distribution
Kerala recorded 1,352 Nilgiri Tahr, making the combined population of Tamil Nadu and Kerala stand at 2,655. This reinforces the species’ stronghold within the Western Ghats. Regular interstate collaboration supports long-term monitoring and habitat restoration.
Conservation Significance
The species plays an important ecological role in sustaining the montane grassland ecosystem. Its rising population reflects ongoing conservation success.
Static GK fact: The Nilgiri Tahr is listed as Endangered under the IUCN Red List.
Future Outlook
With the establishment of interpretation centres and expanded surveys, the State aims to blend scientific study with public participation. Strengthening habitats, reducing disturbances, and encouraging ecological tourism are key to sustaining current gains.
