National platform for textile coordination
National Textiles Ministers Conference in Guwahati: The National Textiles Ministers’ Conference is scheduled to be held on 8–9 January 2026 in Guwahati, Assam. The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Government of Assam.
This two-day national-level meet aims to bring together Union and State stakeholders to evolve a unified strategy for strengthening India’s textile sector. The focus is on long-term coordination rather than isolated policy efforts.
Theme and long-term national vision
The conference is being organised under the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage & Innovation.” The theme reflects the dual objective of industrial expansion and preservation of traditional textile strengths.
Discussions will align with India’s ambition to build a USD 350 billion textile industry and achieve USD 100 billion textile exports by 2030. These targets position textiles as a core pillar of India’s manufacturing-led growth.
Static GK fact: India is one of the world’s largest producers of cotton, jute, silk, and man-made fibres.
Policy discussions and focus areas
Multiple focused sessions are planned to address structural challenges across the textile value chain. Key areas include infrastructure creation, investment facilitation, export competitiveness, and availability of raw materials and fibres.
A strong emphasis will be placed on technical textiles, which include industrial, medical, defence, and agro-textiles. Research and development initiatives will also be discussed to improve productivity and global competitiveness.
Static GK Tip: Technical textiles are categorised into segments like Meditech, Agrotech, Mobiltech, and Geotech.
Traditional textiles and global integration
Revitalisation of handlooms and handicrafts will be a central theme of the conference. Policymakers will explore methods to integrate traditional textiles with modern design, branding, and international market requirements.
The objective is to ensure that heritage sectors remain economically viable while adapting to changing consumer preferences.
Static GK fact: The handloom sector is one of the largest employment generators in rural India after agriculture.
North-East conclave and regional focus
A dedicated conclave on the North-Eastern Region will be held alongside the main conference. The region is known for its strengths in silk production, handloom weaving, and bamboo-based textiles.
Special attention will be given to women-led textile enterprises and the creation of a unified brand identity under the concept of “Textiles from North-East.” This aims to improve market access at national and global levels.
Static GK Tip: Assam is the only Indian state producing all four major varieties of silk.
Exhibition and institutional participation
Ministers and officials from States and Union Territories will share best practices and policy innovations to strengthen regional textile ecosystems. A national exhibition of Indian handlooms and handicrafts will also be organised.
The exhibition will showcase India’s textile diversity, innovation capacity, and readiness for domestic and export markets, highlighting both heritage and modern manufacturing strengths.
