Honouring Earth Scientists
National Geoscience Awards 2024 Recognising India’s Earth Science Excellence: On September 26, 2025, the National Geoscience Awards 2024 were conferred at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre by President Droupadi Murmu. A total of 20 scientists were recognised for contributions in mineral exploration, applied geosciences, and environmental research. The ceremony highlighted India’s growing leadership in geoscientific innovation and sustainable resource management.
Static GK fact: The awards were instituted in 1966 by the Ministry of Mines to encourage excellence in geoscience and mining-related research.
Lifetime Achievement Recognition
The National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement 2024 was presented to Prof. Shyam Sundar Rai, Senior Scientist at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and Visiting Professor at IISER Pune. He was honoured for pioneering work in solid earth studies and exploration geophysics. His seismological research spans the Peninsular region, Himalayas, and Ladakh, contributing to disaster preparedness and tectonic studies.
Static GK Tip: The Himalayan belt is one of the most seismically active zones in the world, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
Young Geoscientist Recognition
The National Young Geoscientist Award 2024 was given to Shri Susobhan Neogi, Senior Geologist at the Geological Survey of India (GSI). His research focused on the tectonic evolution of thrust belts in Meghalaya, Jharkhand, and Bundelkhand Craton, offering insights into mineral genesis and supercontinent formation.
Static GK fact: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was established in 1851 and is headquartered in Kolkata.
Other Award Categories
Apart from individual recognitions, 10 awards were presented for advancements in mining technology, groundwater studies, applied geosciences, and strategic mineral exploration. These highlight the role of geosciences in resource security, water management, and sustainable mining practices.
Static GK fact: India is among the top global producers of mica, iron ore, and bauxite, playing a vital role in global mineral supply chains.
Importance of the Awards
The National Geoscience Awards serve as a benchmark of excellence for India’s scientific community. By rewarding innovations in geophysics, mineral research, and sustainability, the awards inspire future scientists to address challenges in energy security, natural resource management, and climate resilience.
