National Forensic Infrastructure Expansion in India: India’s forensic ecosystem is undergoing accelerated reforms under the National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme, approved in 2024. The financial support covers laboratory modernisation, advanced equipment procurement and improved service quality.
Expansion of CFSL Network
Eight new Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) were approved in 2023 and 2024, increasing India’s capacity to handle forensic examinations. This expansion is expected to reduce case pendency and offer greater regional access to scientific services. Existing CFSLs are simultaneously undergoing manpower improvements through structured recruitment drives.

The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), established in 2020, is a key driver in training forensic professionals. It conducts the annual Forensic Aptitude and Calibre Test (FACT) to evaluate and identify qualified candidates for laboratory roles. These efforts ensure the steady availability of skilled personnel for India’s expanding forensic network.
