Mumbai Mandale Metro Depot Expansion Milestone: Mumbai has strengthened its urban transit ecosystem with the inauguration of the Mandale Metro Depot, now recognised as Asia’s largest metro depot. Its scale and design aim to improve metro operations across the city’s expanding network. The facility supports smoother train circulation and boosts overall service reliability.
Massive Capacity and Strategic Role
The depot spans 30.45 hectares, offering stabling for 72 eight-coach trains. Its double-level layout supports 36 trains on each tier, optimising land use within a dense urban setting. The depot directly supports the DN Nagar–Mandale corridor, improving connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western zones.

Advanced Track and Circulation Network
The Mandale Depot is equipped with 29 km of internal tracks, enabling high-volume train movement. Three elevated viaducts connect the depot to the mainline, reducing operational delays. This helps streamline daily cleaning, stabling, and deployment.

Maintenance and Overhaul Innovations

Testing and Monitoring Excellence
The depot includes India’s longest metro test track, stretching 965 metres, allowing trains to undergo speed, braking, and system trials before passenger service. A G+3 operations control centre monitors all activities round the clock, enhancing safety and coordination.

Smart Systems and Environmental Measures
Automated wash plants handle deep cleaning tasks, while a pit wheel lathe manages wheel profiling efficiently. The depot also features 175 KLD water recycling plants, underground utilities, and dust-control systems, supporting sustainable operations.

Progress of Mumbai Metro Line 2B
Trials have already started on the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch. Full commissioning of the 23.643 km Line 2B corridor, featuring 20 elevated stations, is expected from mid-2026 to late-2027. The corridor is anticipated to ease congestion and boost daily ridership once fully operational.
