Historic scale of IOAA 2025
Mumbai hosts record-breaking International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2025: The 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) opened in Mumbai on 12 August 2025, marking the largest edition in its history. Organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the event gathers over 300 students from 64 countries for 10 days of scientific exchange and competition.
Static GK fact: The IOAA was founded in 2007 to promote astronomy and astrophysics education among high school students globally.
Record participation and diversity
This year records the highest-ever participation with 288 students, including 57 women — the largest female representation in IOAA’s history. A total of 12 countries are joining for the first time, including Algeria, Australia, Bolivia, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Hong Kong, Italy, Laos, Moldova, Palestine, Qatar, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Turkmenistan. Ghana participates as an observer nation.
Four nations have rejoined after a three-year hiatus. War-affected countries like Ukraine, Iraq, and Palestine are competing, while Russia is absent and Belarus participates under the IOAA flag. Pakistan withdrew citing security concerns following the Pahalgam attack.
Static GK fact: The term “observer nation” in international events refers to a country attending without full competitive participation.
Structure of the competition
The IOAA 2025 includes four main formats:
- Theory exams to test conceptual knowledge in astronomy and astrophysics
- Data analysis exams focusing on interpreting astronomical datasets
- Observational exams involving telescopes and instruments
- Team competitions encouraging collaborative problem-solving
Sky observation sessions will take place at the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai, offering students practical exposure.
Static GK fact: The Nehru Planetarium, inaugurated in 1977, is one of India’s leading public astronomy education centres.
Scientific and diplomatic significance
Hosting IOAA 2025 strengthens India’s position as a hub for global science Olympiads. The event promotes STEM education, encourages cross-cultural exchange, and showcases science as a bridge between nations. It also provides a platform for scientific diplomacy, uniting participants from diverse backgrounds through shared academic goals.
Static GK fact: STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — a term widely used in global education policy.
