Scheme Launch and Purpose
Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana Boosts Women’s Employment: On September 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana in Bihar, transferring ₹10,000 each to 75 lakh women via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The total fund disbursed amounts to ₹7,500 crore, making it one of India’s largest women-focused DBT initiatives. The scheme aims to promote self-employment and female-led livelihoods.
Static GK fact: Bihar is the third most populous state in India, with over 12 crore residents.
Key Features
The scheme provides initial financial support of ₹10,000 per woman per household. Based on business performance, women can access further assistance up to ₹2 lakh. Sectors supported include grocery, tailoring, livestock, handicrafts, and small enterprises.
Training and guidance are provided through Bihar’s 11 lakh+ Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Women also benefit from sales support via Gramin Haat-Bazaars, enabling broader market access. Integration with Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative Society ensures microfinance and business training support.
Static GK Tip: Self-Help Groups in India were first promoted under NABARD in 1986 to empower rural women financially.
Fund Transfer and Digital Integration
The simultaneous fund transfer was facilitated by previous digital initiatives like Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar, and mobile banking linkages. Over 30 crore women now have bank accounts, enabling real-time, corruption-free transactions. PM Modi described the scheme as a “brother’s gift to sisters” during Navratri, symbolizing both personal and cultural significance.
Lakhpati Didi Campaign and National Goals
The scheme complements the Lakhpati Didi Campaign, which aims to transform rural women into self-reliant entrepreneurs earning over ₹1 lakh annually. The national target is to empower 3 crore women, with Bihar leading in Lakhpati Didis.
Other supporting initiatives include Mudra Yojana, Drone Didi, Bima Sakhi, and Bank Didi, all providing financial inclusion, skill-based training, and entrepreneurship support.
Static GK fact: The Mudra Yojana was launched in 2015 to provide loans up to ₹10 lakh to non-corporate small businesses.
Implementation and Future Impact
By combining DBT, SHG support, training, and market access, the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana is expected to significantly boost women’s self-employment in Bihar. The initiative also aligns with the Central Government’s vision of 3 crore Lakhpati Didis across India, creating sustainable livelihoods and fostering financial independence.
Static GK Tip: Bihar’s literacy rate is 70.9% as per Census 2011, highlighting the importance of skill-based employment for women.
