Historic Step for Mizoram’s Flower Export Sector
Mizoram Sends First Anthurium Flower Shipment to Singapore, Uplifting Northeast Floriculture: India’s agricultural export landscape witnessed a new chapter as Mizoram exported Anthurium flowers to Singapore for the first time. This pioneering move highlights the export capacity of the North Eastern Region (NER) in the floriculture space. The export was made possible through coordination between the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Horticulture Department of Mizoram, showcasing regional potential in the global ornamental plant market.
Shipment Details and Transportation Route
The initial consignment included 1,024 freshly cut Anthurium flowers, collectively weighing 70 kilograms, and was packed in 50 corrugated boxes. These were cultivated by the Zo Anthurium Growers Cooperative Society in Aizawl and exported by IVC Agrovet Pvt. Ltd. to Veg Pro Singapore Pte. Ltd. The shipment followed the Aizawl–Kolkata–Singapore corridor, emphasizing how northeastern states are becoming capable of handling international perishable cargo logistics.
Cultural Roots and Economic Impact
Anthurium cultivation in Mizoram carries deep community involvement, especially among women-led farming cooperatives. It is celebrated through the state’s popular Anthurium Festival, which draws national and international attention. This first-time export opens new income channels for small-scale growers, boosts tourism, and strengthens Mizoram’s role in the country’s expanding flower economy.
APEDA’s Mission and Regional Export Development
APEDA, functioning under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has been actively supporting agri-export growth from remote and underrepresented areas. The International Buyer-Seller Meet held in Aizawl in December 2024 played a key role in establishing fresh trade partnerships with countries such as Singapore, the UAE, and Russia APEDA plans to replicate such success in other horticultural ventures across the North East, further integrating the region into India’s global agri-trade network.
