Rising Concern Over Violence Against Women
Mizoram GBV Solve Project Strengthens Fight Against Violence on Women: The Government of Mizoram has launched the GBV Solve Project to combat the increasing incidents of gender-based violence (GBV) and to strengthen social and economic empowerment of women. The initiative was inaugurated by Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Minister Lalrinpuii in Aizawl, emphasizing that every woman deserves safety, equality, and opportunity.
Reported GBV cases in Mizoram have seen a fourfold rise, from 3,094 (2022–23) to 12,750 (February 2025). The government has recognised this as an urgent social challenge requiring collaborative action between institutions, communities, and civil society.
Static GK fact: Mizoram became a full-fledged state of India in 1987, with Aizawl as its capital.
Collaborative Initiative for Gender Justice
The GBV Solve Project is a joint initiative between Aparajita and J-PAL South Asia, and is being implemented locally by the Mission Foundation Movement (MFM). This collaboration bridges policy research and community engagement to bring practical change on the ground.
The project focuses on awareness drives, counselling support, and training programmes designed to create a gender-sensitive society. It aims to make local institutions—schools, community groups, and administrative bodies—active partners in the prevention of violence.
Static GK Tip: The J-PAL South Asia is part of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) headquartered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
Empowerment Through Education and Skills
A central focus of the project is education and skill development. Awareness sessions in schools and community centres promote respect and equality among boys and girls from a young age. Women beneficiaries will receive livelihood and entrepreneurship training to promote self-reliance and reduce vulnerability to violence.
By linking economic empowerment with social reform, the GBV Solve Project seeks to make empowerment sustainable. Skill development initiatives are aligned with the National Skill Development Mission, ensuring that training outcomes connect with employability.
Static GK fact: The National Skill Development Mission was launched in 2015 under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
Broader Vision and Nationwide Model
More than 470 proposals were submitted under the national GBV Solve framework, of which six organisations, including MFM, were selected for implementation. Mizoram’s model will be implemented first in Aizawl district, in collaboration with the Women and Child Development Department, before expanding statewide.
The project aims to serve as a replicable model for other states, integrating research-backed policy, community engagement, and government support. It reflects India’s broader commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5 — Gender Equality.
Static GK Tip: SDG 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls by 2030.
