Meghalaya Partners Starlink for Satellite Internet Expansion

Agreement and significance

Meghalaya Partners Starlink for Satellite Internet Expansion: The Meghalaya Government signed an MoU with Starlink India on 6 April 2026 to expand satellite-based internet services. This makes Meghalaya the third Indian state after Maharashtra and Gujarat to formally partner with Starlink.

The initiative aims to improve digital connectivity in remote and hilly regions where traditional infrastructure is difficult to deploy. It aligns with India’s broader goal of digital inclusion and rural connectivity.

Static GK fact: Meghalaya’s capital is Shillong, known as the “Scotland of the East.”

About Starlink

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation project launched in 2019 by SpaceX. It aims to deploy around 42,000 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

These satellites operate closer to Earth compared to traditional systems, reducing latency and improving internet speed. The use of LEO satellites is a key advancement in modern satellite communication.

Static GK Tip: Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ranges between 160 to 2000 km above Earth’s surface.

Understanding satellite internet

Satellite internet provides connectivity through satellites placed in Geostationary Orbit (GSO) or Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO). LEO and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) fall under NGSO.

Unlike fiber or cable networks, it does not depend on physical wires. This allows faster deployment and access in geographically challenging areas.

The infrastructure consists of three segments:

  • Space segment: Network of communication satellites
  • Ground segment: Gateway stations and control systems
  • User segment: Terminals used by end-users

Static GK fact: A Geostationary satellite remains fixed over one point on Earth at an altitude of about 35,786 km.

Advantages of satellite internet

Satellite internet offers global reach, enabling connectivity in remote and underserved regions. It is particularly useful in areas lacking fiber or mobile networks.

It ensures rapid deployment, requiring only power supply and clear sky visibility. This avoids expensive infrastructure projects like laying cables.

It also enhances disaster resilience, restoring communication quickly during natural disasters when terrestrial networks fail.

Static GK Tip: Satellite communication plays a crucial role in disaster management and early warning systems.

Regulatory framework in India

Satellite internet services in India are regulated by multiple agencies. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) grants licences under the Unified Licence Regime.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommends policies related to spectrum allocation for satellite services.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) promotes and authorizes private participation in the space sector.

Static GK fact: IN-SPACe was established in 2020 to boost private sector involvement in India’s space ecosystem.

Way forward

The partnership is expected to strengthen digital infrastructure in North-East India. It can bridge the digital divide and promote economic and educational development.

However, challenges such as regulatory approvals, pricing, and spectrum allocation must be addressed. Ensuring affordability and scalability will be crucial for long-term success.
