Green push in Delhi NCR
Matri Van Urban Forest Project in Aravallis: The Matri Van initiative was launched in Gurugram as a part of the central government’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme. The aim is to build a large-scale urban forest over 750 acres in the Aravalli Hills to promote ecological restoration.
The launch event took place during Van Mahotsav 2025, inaugurated by Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Manohar Lal Khattar, showcasing multi-stakeholder collaboration.
Restoring Aravalli ecosystem
The Matri Van is planned as a theme-based forest, inspired by the nurturing aspect of motherhood. The key goal is to revive the Aravalli ecosystem, a critical natural barrier protecting Delhi NCR from desertification.
The forest will improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and support mental well-being by offering green leisure zones.
Static GK fact: The Aravalli Range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in India, stretching across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi.
Native trees and biodiversity revival
The project will eliminate invasive species like Kabuli Kikar (Prosopis juliflora) and reintroduce native trees such as Bargad, Peepal, Neem, Dhak, and Dhaunk.
Matri Van will include special groves such as Bodhi Vatika, Medicinal Plants Vatika, and Butterfly Gardens, helping to conserve flora and attract diverse fauna.
Static GK Tip: The Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) is known for releasing oxygen even at night, making it ecologically valuable.
Public engagement and sustainability
The initiative emphasizes community participation through CSR, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), school children, and NGOs.
The forest will host cycle tracks, yoga spaces, nature trails, gazebos, and rainwater bodies to support groundwater recharge and prevent floods.
Treated wastewater will be used for irrigation via misting and sprinkler systems, promoting efficient green maintenance.
Alignment with national goals
The project directly supports Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), encouraging mindful resource usage and responsible urban living.
India’s renewable energy target is over 50%, and this forest complements the climate mitigation efforts under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
Static GK fact: Mission LiFE was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow, promoting individual action for sustainability.
Gurugram as a model green city
Through Matri Van, Gurugram aims to transform into an Ideal Millennium City with improved urban sustainability and environmental consciousness.
This initiative could serve as a model for other Indian metro cities to replicate, supporting climate resilience and public health.
