First-of-its-kind wellness move
Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh Redefines Workplace Wellness: The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh was launched on 18th July 2025 at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. Spearheaded by the Department of Legal Affairs, this wellness space is India’s first government-backed fitness facility exclusively for women employees.
It was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal. The initiative transforms a former garage space into a health and fitness zone, emphasizing the government’s vision of human-centric governance.
Promoting inclusive health culture
This move supports the Fit India Movement and echoes the goal of Viksit Bharat. By prioritizing women’s wellness, it recognizes the importance of mental and physical health at workplaces.
Women employees, often juggling multiple roles, face high stress and health neglect. This facility sends a clear message: health is a workplace priority, not a personal luxury.
Key objectives of the initiative
The primary aim is to promote workplace fitness, especially for women working in demanding government roles. It also seeks to:
- Embed self-care into daily routines
- Foster work-life balance
- Encourage other departments to replicate wellness spaces
Facilities and infrastructure
The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh includes a fully equipped gymnasium designed specifically for women. It also features a private lactation room, ensuring support for nursing mothers.
Static GK fact: Lactation rooms in workplaces are recommended under the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017, which ensures support for working mothers post-childbirth.
Managed by the Department of Legal Affairs, the space highlights how even unused government infrastructure can be repurposed for meaningful welfare.
Wider impact on governance
The launch sets a benchmark in how government offices can support human-centric policy design. This initiative:
- Enhances employee well-being
- Boosts workforce productivity
- Encourages similar wellness models across ministries
Static GK Tip: The Fit India Movement was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 29 August 2019, aiming to encourage Indians to lead healthier lives.
By combining health, inclusivity, and innovation, Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh could become a model for future-ready, empathetic governance.
