Project foundation
Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project in Rajasthan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP). This is one of the largest nuclear power ventures in India. It marks a major push in clean energy generation and energy security.
Investment and reactors
The project involves an investment of nearly ₹42,000 crore. It will have four 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). These reactors, known as IPHWR 700, are designed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
Static GK fact: Rajasthan already hosts nuclear plants at Rawatbhata near Kota.
Fleet mode strategy
MBRAPP comes under the fleet mode programme for nuclear power expansion. The plan is to build ten identical 700 MW reactors across India. Three reactors are already commissioned under this model. Fleet mode helps cut costs, accelerate timelines, and unify operational standards.
Static GK Tip: India’s first nuclear power plant was Tarapur Atomic Power Station, commissioned in 1969.
Collaboration with NTPC
The project is developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam (ASHVINI). It is a joint venture between NPCIL (51%) and NTPC Limited (49%). This partnership combines nuclear expertise with power sector management. It reflects India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in technology.
Economic and social growth
The project will generate clean, affordable power for Rajasthan and neighbouring states. It will create thousands of jobs, both direct and indirect. Local industries and businesses are expected to benefit. The initiative will boost regional development and contribute to sustainable growth.
Renewable energy expansion
Alongside the nuclear project, the Prime Minister inaugurated the RSDCL Nokh Solar Park in Phalodi, Rajasthan. This is a 925 MW solar power project, of which 735 MW is developed by NTPC. The solar park strengthens renewable capacity and reduces emissions.
Static GK fact: Rajasthan is India’s largest solar energy producer, contributing over 20% of the nation’s installed solar capacity.
