Digital tracking gets official in Maharashtra
Maharashtra Launches Geo-Tagged Infra ID System for Better Project Tracking: In a step that could redefine infrastructure governance, the Maharashtra government has introduced a new system to track all infrastructure projects with the help of a 13-character geo-tagged Unique Infra ID. Think of it like an Aadhaar card for projects. Each public infrastructure venture, whether a road, dam, or drainage system, will now have a digital identity that traces its origin, purpose, location, and progress.
This move is about more than just data—it’s a digital push to clean up red tape, cut down project duplication, and make government departments work in sync.
What is this Unique ID all about?
The ID is a 13-digit alphanumeric code, smartly designed to capture vital details about the project in one line. For example, the ID “M25RURWRDRODW001” tells you the state, year, scheme, district, asset type, and serial number. Once a project is officially approved, this ID becomes mandatory.
This system is not just paperwork—it ties every project to a specific location through geo-tagging using satellite tech. The aim? Real-time, map-based monitoring of public works so that nothing slips through the cracks.
The pilot kicks off from Wardha
The scheme officially launched on June 9, 2025, with Wardha district in Vidarbha becoming the first testing ground. From October 1, 2025, every district and every government department involved in infrastructure—from Public Works to Irrigation—must follow suit. By March 2026, even older projects dating back to 2020 will be brought into the system.
This is part of a larger effort to digitize governance and keep infrastructure development clean, transparent, and accountable.
Role of technology in the initiative
The tech muscle behind this plan is MRSAC (Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre). It will ensure that each project is geo-tagged accurately, helping track construction, monitor delays, and reduce cost overruns. The Infra ID Portal is already live and allows both officials and the public to view details of ongoing works.
India has seen successful tech integrations like this before—PM Gati Shakti, for example, aims to connect multi-modal infrastructure. Maharashtra’s Infra ID push aligns with that national vision, but with a strong local focus.
Governance checks and balances
Each district will have a Collector’s Committee to monitor the projects, cancel IDs of abandoned works, or modify entries when needed. This decentralizes control and builds accountability into the process.
The introduction of this unique ID is a silent but powerful step toward smart governance. It doesn’t just track cement and steel—it tracks responsibility.
