After Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, Shastri became India’s second Prime Minister on 27 May 1964. Despite serving only for 19 months, his tenure was marked by firm leadership during crises.

He gave the army full freedom during the 1965 India-Pakistan War, strengthening national morale. At the same time, he promoted the Green Revolution to address food shortages and supported the White Revolution to boost milk production.
