Kusunpur Smart Village Initiative
Kusunpur Emerging as Odisha’s First Smart Village: Kusunpur village in Kendrapada district of Odisha is set to become the state’s first smart village under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The project is launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology to transform rural living through science-based solutions.
The village, with around 130 families and 700 people, is being developed as a model for sustainable and self-reliant rural development. It aims to bridge the rural-urban gap using modern technologies.
Static GK fact: Odisha capital is Bhubaneswar, and the state is frequently affected by cyclones due to its coastal location.
Vision of Smart Village Development
The project adopts a mission-mode approach where multiple institutions collaborate for holistic development. The focus is on creating a climate-resilient and economically stable rural ecosystem.
The model emphasizes self-sufficiency, digital access, and environmental sustainability. If successful, it can act as a replicable blueprint for smart villages across India.
Static GK Tip: The concept of smart villages complements the Smart Cities Mission launched in 2015.
Role of CSIR Institutions
Several specialized CSIR research institutes are involved, each contributing domain expertise. These include CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, CSIR-IMMT Bhubaneswar, CSIR-CEERI, CSIR-NIIST, CSIR-SERC, and CSIR-CLRI.
Their combined efforts ensure solutions in infrastructure, materials, electronics, and sustainable technologies. This multi-institutional collaboration strengthens the project’s scientific base.
Infrastructure and Resilience Development
A key focus is on building climate-resilient infrastructure. The project includes construction of durable schools, anganwadi centres, and community sanitation facilities.
Special attention is given to cyclone shelters, considering Odisha’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Improved village planning and layout will enhance safety and living standards.
Static GK fact: Odisha has successfully reduced cyclone fatalities through early warning systems after the 1999 Super Cyclone.
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living
The initiative promotes renewable energy solutions, especially solar power, to reduce dependence on conventional sources. It also focuses on clean cooking fuel and safe drinking water access.
These measures aim to improve health, hygiene, and environmental sustainability. The integration of clean energy will also reduce carbon emissions in rural areas.
Skill Development and Future Impact
The project includes skill development programs to enhance employability and entrepreneurship in rural areas. Training in modern agricultural practices and small-scale industries will be provided.
This will help create local employment opportunities and reduce migration to urban areas. The initiative ultimately supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Static GK Tip: CSIR was established in 1942 and is one of India’s largest research and development organizations.
