Record Procurement Achieved
Kuruvai Paddy Procurement Drive in Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu has achieved a record procurement of 11.21 lakh tonnes of paddy during the 2025–26 Kuruvai season, marking a major success in the state’s agricultural operations. The Kuruvai crop, typically sown during the short-term season from June to September, is one of the three main rice crops grown in Tamil Nadu, alongside Samba and Navarai.
Static GK fact: The term Kuruvai refers to the early short-term paddy crop cultivated mainly in the Cauvery delta districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam.
Support to Farmers
To ensure fair compensation, the Tamil Nadu government disbursed ₹2,709 crore directly to 1,45,634 farmers through digital payment systems. This transparent mechanism has significantly boosted farmer confidence and income security. The procurement process ensures that farmers receive the Minimum Support Price (MSP) without any middlemen interference.
Static GK fact: The MSP for paddy is fixed by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) under the Union Ministry of Agriculture to safeguard farmers’ interests.
Efficient Procurement Mechanism
More than 30,000 tonnes of paddy are being procured daily, transported efficiently from the Cauvery delta to various other districts for storage and milling. The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) plays a key role in maintaining the smooth movement and storage of the procured grains, ensuring that the state’s food supply chain remains robust.
Static GK fact: TNCSC was established in 1972 to manage public distribution and procurement of food grains across Tamil Nadu.
Infrastructure and Procurement Centres
A total of 1,872 Direct Procurement Centres (DPCs) have been opened across the state to streamline paddy collection. These centres function as the main link between farmers and the government procurement agencies. Each DPC is equipped with facilities for weighing, grading, and quality testing, ensuring that only fair quality paddy is procured.
Static GK fact: The Direct Procurement Centre system was first introduced in Tamil Nadu in the early 2000s to minimize exploitation by middlemen.
Boost to Food Security and Rural Economy
This large-scale procurement strengthens food security and supports rural livelihoods, ensuring a stable rice supply for the Public Distribution System (PDS). The initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu’s policy to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains while supporting the agricultural economy.
Static GK Tip: The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies jointly manage the storage and distribution of procured grains across India.
