Kota Bundi Greenfield Airport set to reshape air travel in Rajasthan

Rising significance of Kota

Kota Bundi Greenfield Airport set to reshape air travel in Rajasthan: Kota, situated on the banks of the Chambal River, has gained recognition as both the industrial powerhouse of Rajasthan and a leading education destination for aspirants across India. Its dual identity has long demanded stronger transport networks to support growing academic and economic needs.

Static GK fact: Kota is world-famous for its coaching institutes preparing students for IIT-JEE and NEET.

Shortcomings of the current airport

The existing Kota Airport has very limited capacity. With only a 1,220m runway suitable for small Code B aircraft and a tiny 400 sqm terminal, the facility can handle just about 50 passengers at peak hours. Urban sprawl around the site prevents any meaningful expansion, leaving it unfit for large-scale commercial services.

Approval for a new facility

To address this gap, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the proposal of the Airports Authority of India for constructing a Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi. The plan involves an outlay of ₹1,507 crore, with the Rajasthan Government already handing over more than 440 hectares of land.

Infrastructure blueprint

The new airport will feature a 20,000 sqm passenger terminal designed to manage 1,000 travelers at peak hours and up to 2 million passengers annually. Its key elements include a 3,200m runway, an apron for seven A-321 aircraft, two taxiways, a modern air traffic control block, firefighting facilities, and dedicated car parking.

Static GK tip: Cochin International Airport was India’s first Greenfield Airport, becoming operational in 1999.

Boost to education and industries

The project is expected to transform travel for the student community, offering direct links to major cities for aspirants, teachers, and parents. It will also ease connectivity for business leaders and industrial operators, strengthening Kota’s position as a hub for both learning and manufacturing.

Regional development prospects

Once operational, the airport will serve as a catalyst for tourism, investments, and local enterprise. The construction phase and later operations will create substantial employment opportunities. Ancillary sectors such as hospitality, logistics, and road transport are also likely to benefit from the enhanced movement of people and goods.

Static GK fact: Rajasthan is the largest Indian state by area, accounting for more than 10% of the country’s total landmass.

Challenges and way forward

The project must remain within the approved cost and schedule to achieve timely delivery. Authorities need to carry out comprehensive environmental assessments while ensuring minimal social disruption. Long-term traffic forecasts will play a critical role in determining whether the airport operates at its full potential without underutilization or congestion.
