Historic Railway Project in Odisha
Khurda Balangir Railway Line Nears Historic Completion: The 301-km Khurda Road–Balangir railway line in Odisha is nearing full completion after more than a century of planning and delays. The project was originally conceived during the pre-Independence era, but difficult terrain, forest clearances and financial constraints slowed its progress for decades.
The railway line connects the districts of Khurda, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur and Balangir, linking remote regions of western Odisha with the national railway network. With an estimated investment of ₹5,000 crore, the project is expected to significantly improve passenger and freight connectivity in the region.
Static GK fact: Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network in the world, with more than 68,000 km of route length.
Major Connectivity Benefits
The railway corridor is designed to strengthen transportation access in interior Odisha. Among the five districts connected, Nayagarh, Sonepur and Boudh received railway connectivity for the first time through this project.
Out of the total 301 km route, nearly 226 km is already operational. At present, four trains operate between Khurda Road and Daspalla, while three trains run between Balangir and Purunakatak, carrying approximately 5,000 passengers daily.
The project is being implemented by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone of Indian Railways, headquartered in Bhubaneswar.
Static GK Tip: The East Coast Railway Zone was established in 2003 and mainly manages railway operations in Odisha and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Engineering Works Near Satkosia Landscape
One of the most technically challenging sections of the railway lies between Daspalla in Nayagarh district and Purunakatak in Boudh district, covering around 75 km. This stretch passes close to Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary, which forms part of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
To reduce ecological disruption and wildlife accidents, several structural modifications were introduced. Engineers constructed seven tunnels covering 12.76 km through the hilly terrain.
Additionally, 12 wildlife underpasses and six wildlife overpasses were built along the route. Special elephant corridors were designed in consultation with the forest department to allow safe movement of elephants across the railway line.
Static GK fact: The Satkosia Tiger Reserve, located along the Mahanadi River, was declared a tiger reserve in 2007 and represents a unique ecosystem combining Eastern Ghats forests and riverine habitats.
Construction of a Major Railway Viaduct
A remarkable engineering feature of the project is a 4.77-km viaduct built along the railway corridor. The structure includes pillars reaching heights of nearly 26 metres, allowing trains to pass above the forest landscape.
Once operational, the viaduct is expected to become the second longest viaduct in Indian Railways. Apart from supporting train movement, the structure also functions as a wildlife passage, enabling animals such as elephants and deer to move freely underneath.
This approach helps reduce train-wildlife collisions, which remain a major conservation concern in several forested railway zones across India.
Eco Friendly Railway Development
Environmental considerations played an important role in the project’s design. Instead of building large soil embankments, engineers used high-rise viaduct structures, reducing land disturbance.
As a result, nearly two lakh trees were preserved during construction. Soil excavation was also minimized between Buguda and Banigochha stations.
After construction, the roofs of tunnels will be converted into grazing areas, helping restore the natural landscape for local wildlife.
Long Pending Infrastructure Vision
The completion of the Khurda–Balangir railway line marks the realization of one of India’s oldest pending railway infrastructure projects. Once the remaining section becomes operational, it will strengthen regional trade, passenger mobility and economic integration across western Odisha.
For many residents of Boudh, Nayagarh and Sonepur, the railway line represents the first access to rail transportation since Independence, highlighting the transformative role of infrastructure in regional development.
