Kavita Chand on Mount Vinson

A Landmark Indian Achievement

Kavita Chand on Mount Vinson: Kavita Chand, a mountaineer from Almora district of Uttarakhand, achieved a historic feat by summiting Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, on December 12, 2025. She reached the summit at 8:30 pm local time, standing at an elevation of 4,892 metres.

This ascent marks one of the most notable Indian achievements in polar mountaineering. Mount Vinson is among the least climbed of the Seven Summits due to its isolation and harsh environment.

Static GK fact: Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on Earth.

Understanding Mount Vinson

Mount Vinson lies in the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It is known for its extreme remoteness and absence of permanent human settlements.

Temperatures can fall below –30°C, and climbers must be entirely self-reliant. Weather changes rapidly, making accurate forecasting difficult.

Static GK Tip: Mount Vinson was discovered in 1957 and named after U.S. politician Carl Vinson.

Expedition Route and Logistics

Kavita’s expedition began on December 3, 2025, when she departed India. She reached Punta Arenas, Chile, a key Antarctic gateway, on December 4.

From there, she flew to Union Glacier on December 7 using a ski-equipped aircraft. The team was later transferred to Vinson Base Camp at approximately 2,100 metres.

Such aircraft are essential due to the absence of roads or conventional runways in Antarctica.

Static GK fact: Union Glacier Camp is a seasonal logistics hub for scientific and climbing expeditions.

Team and Professional Support

The climb was led by renowned high-altitude guide Mingma David Sherpa. Operational support was provided by Indian mountaineer Bharath Thammineni and his expedition team.

A nine-member Indian team followed a structured acclimatisation schedule before attempting the summit. This systematic approach is critical for preventing altitude-related illnesses in polar conditions.

Static GK Tip: Acclimatisation allows the body to adapt to lower oxygen levels at high altitudes.

Progress in the Seven Summits Challenge

By conquering Mount Vinson, Kavita Chand moved significantly closer to completing the Seven Summits challenge. This challenge involves climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents.

She had earlier scaled Mount Elbrus in Europe. Carrying the Indian tricolour at the Antarctic summit, she described the moment as one of national pride.

Static GK fact: The Seven Summits concept was popularised in the late 20th century by mountaineers Dick Bass and Reinhold Messner.

From Corporate Life to Endurance Sports

Currently based in Mumbai, the 40-year-old climber is also a competitive endurance athlete. She won the Delhi and Mumbai Hyrox 2025 events in her age category.

She has completed three races towards the Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Challenge. In 2024, she left her corporate media career to pursue fitness full time.

Her journey highlights the growing role of Indian women in global endurance and mountaineering achievements.
