A Landmark Indian Achievement
Kavita Chand on Mount Vinson: Kavita Chand, a mountaineer from Almora district of Uttarakhand, achieved a historic feat by summiting Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, on December 12, 2025. She reached the summit at 8:30 pm local time, standing at an elevation of 4,892 metres.
This ascent marks one of the most notable Indian achievements in polar mountaineering. Mount Vinson is among the least climbed of the Seven Summits due to its isolation and harsh environment.

Understanding Mount Vinson
Mount Vinson lies in the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It is known for its extreme remoteness and absence of permanent human settlements.
Temperatures can fall below –30°C, and climbers must be entirely self-reliant. Weather changes rapidly, making accurate forecasting difficult.

Expedition Route and Logistics
Kavita’s expedition began on December 3, 2025, when she departed India. She reached Punta Arenas, Chile, a key Antarctic gateway, on December 4.
From there, she flew to Union Glacier on December 7 using a ski-equipped aircraft. The team was later transferred to Vinson Base Camp at approximately 2,100 metres.
Such aircraft are essential due to the absence of roads or conventional runways in Antarctica.

Team and Professional Support
The climb was led by renowned high-altitude guide Mingma David Sherpa. Operational support was provided by Indian mountaineer Bharath Thammineni and his expedition team.
