Tamil Nadu’s Ongoing Conservation Efforts
Kasampatty Sacred Grove Declared Tamil Nadu’s Second Biodiversity Heritage Site: In a major step toward environmental protection, Tamil Nadu has declared Kasampatty (Veeran Kovil) Sacred Grove in Dindigul district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS). This makes it the second BHS in the state, after Arittapatti in Madurai was notified in 2022. The announcement was made under the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, which empowers state governments to recognize ecologically rich areas for protection.
Location and Ecological Significance
The Kasampatty Sacred Grove spans approximately 4.97 hectares and is located close to the Alagarmalai Reserve Forest. Despite its small size, the grove plays a vital ecological role. It acts as a green corridor, helping in the movement of species and maintaining ecosystem balance. Such sacred groves, traditionally protected by communities, have now become natural reservoirs of biodiversity.
Rich Flora and Biodiversity Composition
Kasampatty BHS boasts an impressive variety of plant life. According to the biodiversity assessment, the grove is home to 48 tree species, 22 shrub species, 21 types of lianas, and 29 herb varieties. This diversity supports several small fauna and contributes to seed dispersal and pollination in the surrounding landscape. The area also has religious and cultural significance, as the Veeran Kovil temple located within the grove ensures community-led preservation efforts.
State Strategy and Conservation Future
The Tamil Nadu State Biodiversity Board has been proactive in identifying unique ecological zones and recommending them for heritage status. With the recognition of Kasampatty, the state signals its intent to preserve smaller but biologically significant patches of land. These designations not only protect biodiversity but also promote community awareness and eco-tourism. Local panchayats and forest departments are expected to play a major role in its long-term conservation.
