A new landmark
Kalaignar Convention Centre Muttukadu: When Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone at Muttukadu, it marked the beginning of a major transformation along the East Coast Road (ECR). This centre, known as the Kalaignar Convention Centre, will cover a massive 38 acres and cost around ₹525 crore. Imagine a complex with halls, auditoriums, and exhibition spaces—all nestled by the beautiful Chennai coast.
What it will include?
You can picture it now: five lakh square feet of built-up space. There’s a 10,000-seat exhibition hall, a 5,000-seat convention centre, plus a 1,500-seat auditorium. Think big events—international summits, concerts, and trade expos. And yes, it will have modern features like central air-conditioning, EV charging, elevators, and parking for more than 1,600 cars and 1,700 two-wheelers.
Why it matters?
Right now, Chennai depends on college campuses or YMCA grounds for big events, which gets messy with traffic and logistics. This new venue, just outside the city, could significantly reduce congestion in residential areas by moving big gatherings away from the city core. That’s a smart and strategic plan.
Linked infrastructure
Alongside this centre, Stalin also inaugurated other key projects totalling nearly ₹499 crore. That includes:
- Four-laning major roads in Namakkal district
- A new 730‑metre flyover at Palanganatham in Madurai
- Resettlement housing for Irular families in Ranipet
- Plus, urban upgrades in Chennai like underground drainage and new civic vehicles.
Looking ahead
Construction is expected to wrap up by late 2025 or early 2026, once CRZ clearances are finalised. If everything goes well, Chennai will have a world-class venue that attracts global events, boosts tourism, and sparks local business growth.
