Project Overview
Kalai II Hydro Electric Project Arunachal Pradesh: The Kalai II Hydro Electric Project is a major hydropower initiative approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) under the leadership of Narendra Modi in April 2026. The project is planned on the Lohit River in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh.
With an estimated cost of ₹14,105.83 crore, the project aims to generate 1200 MW of clean electricity. It marks a significant push toward strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity.

Key Features and Capacity
The project will consist of 7 generating units, including 6 units of 190 MW and 1 unit of 60 MW. It is expected to produce around 4,852.95 million units (MU) of electricity annually.
The estimated construction period is 78 months (around 6.5 years). This makes it one of the largest upcoming hydroelectric projects in Northeast India.

Implementation and Partnerships
The project will be developed through a joint venture between THDC India Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. This ensures a blend of technical expertise and regional participation.
The central government will provide ₹599.88 crore for supporting infrastructure like roads, bridges, and transmission lines. This will improve both energy and physical connectivity in the region.
Strategic Importance
The project is the first major hydroelectric initiative in the Lohit Basin, making it strategically important. It will strengthen power availability in Arunachal Pradesh and Northeast India.
Hydropower plays a crucial role in grid stability, as it can quickly adjust power output to meet peak demand. This project will support national grid balancing and energy security.
