Justice Delivered in the Pollachi Sexual Assault Case: A Landmark Verdict for Women’s Safety: In 2019, a horrifying case from Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, gripped the country. A group of men had allegedly lured, sexually assaulted, and blackmailed several women over years. The case exploded into public consciousness when videos of the crimes surfaced, exposing the deep-rooted rot of abuse and impunity. It was not just a crime, but a reflection of systemic failure—until the judiciary took over.

Life Imprisonment Till Death: What the Court Ordered

In May 2025, the Mahila Court in Coimbatore pronounced its final verdict. All nine accused were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment till death. The phrase “till death” is important—there’s often a misconception that life imprisonment means just 14 years. The Supreme Court clarified in earlier rulings that a life term literally means imprisonment for the entire remaining natural life of the convict.

In addition to the life sentence, the court also imposed additional prison terms between 3 to 10 years based on the specific charges. • Section 376(2)(n): Repeated rape of the same woman, also carrying heavy punishment.
• Other sections invoked by the CBI include 120B (criminal conspiracy), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 and 354B (assault or criminal force on a woman), and 366 (abduction).

Together, these sections reflect the court’s acknowledgment of the seriousness and recurring nature of the crimes.

Role of CBI and Special Women’s Court

Initially, the case was investigated by CB-CID but due to its complexity and public outrage, it was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in March 2019. The final trial took place in the Magalir Neethimandram, Tamil Nadu’s special women’s court, established in 2002 to fast-track cases involving crimes against women.

This court is unique: it is presided over by a female judge, and most of its staff—including clerks, advocates, and police personnel—are also women. This setup ensures that sensitive cases like sexual assault are handled with empathy and focus.
