Launch of a mega aviation project
Jewar Airport Boosts India Aviation Infrastructure: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase-1 of the Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh. The project, developed at a cost of around ₹11,200 crore, marks a major milestone in India’s aviation sector.
The event was attended by key leaders including Yogi Adityanath. The airport is one of the largest greenfield airport projects in India, built from scratch with modern infrastructure.
Static GK fact: A greenfield airport is constructed on undeveloped land, unlike brownfield projects that expand existing airports.
Second gateway for Delhi NCR
The Noida International Airport will act as the second international gateway for the Delhi-NCR region, complementing the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport. Rising passenger traffic has increased pressure on Delhi’s primary airport.
The new airport will significantly reduce congestion and improve regional connectivity. It will benefit not only Delhi but also nearby states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Static GK Tip: Delhi-NCR is one of India’s largest urban agglomerations, covering parts of multiple states.
Passenger capacity and expansion vision
In Phase-1, the airport is expected to handle around 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA). However, it has been designed with long-term scalability in mind.
Once fully developed, the airport’s capacity will expand to nearly 70 million passengers annually. This makes it one of the largest aviation hubs in India in the future.
The phased expansion strategy ensures that infrastructure growth matches rising air travel demand.
Net-zero and sustainable infrastructure
The airport is being developed as a net-zero emissions facility, reflecting India’s commitment to sustainable development. It incorporates energy-efficient systems, renewable energy sources, and eco-friendly construction practices.
This approach aligns with India’s global climate commitments and promotes green aviation infrastructure. The project sets a benchmark for future infrastructure development.
Static GK fact: India aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, as announced at global climate forums.
Emerging cargo and logistics hub
The airport is also designed as a major cargo and logistics hub. It includes a multi-modal cargo facility, integrated terminals, and dedicated logistics zones.
In Phase-1, cargo handling capacity is estimated at over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually. This is expected to increase to 18 lakh metric tonnes in later stages.
A 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility will further strengthen India’s aviation ecosystem by reducing dependence on foreign services.
Static GK Tip: MRO facilities are crucial for aircraft maintenance, reducing costs and improving operational efficiency.
Strategic importance for India
The Jewar airport enhances India’s position as a global aviation hub. It supports economic growth by improving connectivity, boosting trade, and attracting investments.
It also plays a key role in regional development by creating employment and improving infrastructure in western Uttar Pradesh.
The project reflects India’s long-term vision of building world-class infrastructure to support economic expansion.
