New milestone in Chennai infrastructure
J Anbazhagan Flyover Inauguration in Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister inaugurated the two-kilometre J Anbazhagan Flyover in T Nagar, marking a major boost to Chennai’s urban infrastructure. It is now the longest flyover in the city, easing traffic flow in one of the busiest commercial hubs.
The project is named after J. Anbazhagan, the late DMK legislator, known for his contributions to Tamil Nadu politics.
Reducing congestion in T Nagar
T Nagar is a commercial hotspot in Chennai, known for textiles and jewellery shopping. The area has faced severe traffic congestion due to its narrow roads and heavy footfall.
The flyover is expected to decongest the busy junctions of Usman Road and Burkit Road, providing relief to commuters and traders.
Static GK fact: T Nagar (Thyagaraya Nagar) is named after Sir P. Thyagaraya Chetty, a prominent leader of the Justice Party.
Features of the flyover
The flyover stretches 2 km, making it the longest in Chennai, surpassing the previous record held by the Kathipara Grade Separator. It includes modern design elements with provisions for smooth vehicular movement.
The construction was undertaken under the supervision of the Greater Chennai Corporation and funded by the State Government.
Static GK Tip: The Kathipara junction in Chennai is one of the largest cloverleaf interchanges in Asia.
Significance for urban mobility
The project is part of the state’s broader push for civic infrastructure to meet the growing demands of Chennai’s population. It is expected to reduce travel time, improve connectivity, and support commercial activities.
The flyover also reflects the government’s focus on sustainable urban planning, aligning with future metro expansion and smart city projects.
Tribute to J Anbazhagan
Naming the structure after J Anbazhagan pays tribute to his service as a three-time legislator from the Chepauk–Triplicane constituency. He passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications.
This commemoration highlights the practice of honoring political leaders through public infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu.
