The site’s rocky terrain, cold desert climate, and low oxygen levels make it ideal for simulating extraterrestrial conditions. From 135 applicants, ISRO chose Rahul Mogalapalli (PhD candidate, Purdue University) and Yaman Akot (planetary science graduate, University of Aberdeen). Selection was based on medical fitness, psychological resilience, and experience in confined simulations. A 15-day acclimatisation programme prepared them for Ladakh’s extreme environment.
