Farming Systems
Integrated Farming Systems for Resilient Rural Economy: The Union Agriculture Minister on 09 February 2026 urged scientists to strengthen and expand Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) tailored for small farmers. Nearly 89.4% of Indian farmers operate on landholdings below 2 hectares, making diversification essential for income stability. The push highlights the need for region-specific and climate-resilient farm models.
Static GK fact: According to the Agricultural Census 2015–16, small and marginal farmers form the backbone of Indian agriculture, which contributes around 18% to India’s GDP and employs nearly 45% of the workforce.
Understanding Integrated Farming Systems
IFS is a synergistic approach where multiple farm enterprises—crops, livestock, horticulture, fisheries, poultry, and apiary—are integrated within a single farm unit. Each component supports the other through resource recycling and shared inputs.
For example, crop residues feed livestock, livestock manure enriches soil fertility, and farm ponds support fisheries and irrigation. This closed-loop model reduces external input dependence and improves farm sustainability.
Static GK Tip: India has 15 major agro-climatic zones, and IFS models must be customized according to rainfall, soil type, and cropping pattern.
Significance for Small Farmers
Income Security
Diversification provides multiple revenue streams throughout the year. Even if one crop fails due to monsoon irregularities or price crashes, allied activities like dairy or poultry offer financial cushioning.
Studies show that properly implemented IFS models can significantly enhance net farm income compared to monocropping systems.
Resource Efficiency
IFS promotes nutrient recycling. Organic waste from livestock and crops reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers and commercial feed, lowering production costs.
Efficient water management through integrated ponds and micro-irrigation also supports sustainability.
Nutritional Security
Farm households gain access to milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and fish, ensuring a balanced diet. This directly addresses rural malnutrition and improves food diversity at the household level.
Ecological Stability
Scientific cropping methods like intercropping and mixed crop rotation increase biodiversity. These practices reduce pest incidence and optimize use of water, sunlight, and soil nutrients.
Static GK fact: India is the world’s largest producer of milk and among the top producers of fish and eggs, making integration of allied sectors highly feasible.
Challenges in Implementation
Despite benefits, IFS faces structural barriers. Establishing cattle sheds, fishponds, or poultry units requires substantial initial capital investment.
There is also a knowledge gap. Many traditional farmers lack technical skills to manage multi-layered enterprises. Additionally, IFS is labour-intensive, which can strain small households.
Government Support Mechanisms
The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) under its Rainfed Area Development (RAD) component promotes location-specific IFS clusters.
The Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) gives states flexibility to fund innovative IFS infrastructure. The Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) encourages organic nutrient cycling between livestock and crops.
The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan aims to bridge the lab-to-land gap by deploying scientists to rural areas. Meanwhile, the ICAR-AICRP on IFS is developing region-specific models across 25 states to optimize productivity.
This integrated strategy aims to transform subsistence farming into a resilient, diversified rural enterprise system.
