INS Sanshodhak Strengthens India Maritime Survey Capabilities

Induction of INS Sanshodhak

INS Sanshodhak Strengthens India Maritime Survey Capabilities: The Indian Navy inducted INS Sanshodhak on March 30, 2026, completing an important naval project. It is the fourth and final Survey Vessel (Large) in its class.

The vessel was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata, showcasing India’s growing shipbuilding capacity. This marks a major milestone in strengthening maritime infrastructure.

Static GK fact: GRSE is one of India’s leading defence shipyards under the Ministry of Defence.

Completion of survey vessel project

The induction of INS Sanshodhak completes a four-ship project initiated in October 2018. These vessels were designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.

The other ships in this class include INS Sandhayak (2024), INS Nirdeshak (2024), and INS Ikshak (2025). All ships follow strict standards set by the Indian Register of Shipping.

Static GK Tip: The Indian Navy operates under the Chief of Naval Staff and is headquartered in New Delhi.

Advanced technical features

INS Sanshodhak is equipped with modern systems to conduct both coastal and deep-sea hydrographic surveys. It has a displacement of around 3400 tonnes and a length of 110 metres.

The vessel can achieve speeds exceeding 18 knots and uses twin diesel engines for propulsion. It carries advanced equipment such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

Key onboard technologies include Digital Side Scan Sonar, DGPS positioning systems, and real-time data processing units. These tools enable accurate mapping of underwater terrain.

Static GK fact: Hydrography is the science of measuring and describing physical features of oceans and seas.

Role in maritime and civil operations

INS Sanshodhak plays a critical role in ensuring safe navigation routes and supporting port and harbour development. It helps in mapping seabed conditions and identifying underwater hazards.

Beyond defence, the vessel contributes to oceanographic research, environmental monitoring, and geophysical data collection. These functions are essential for coastal planning and disaster preparedness.

The data generated also supports sectors like shipping, fisheries, and offshore infrastructure development.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat

A key highlight of INS Sanshodhak is its over 80% indigenous content, reflecting India’s push towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This project has supported domestic industries and MSMEs.

Indigenous manufacturing reduces dependency on foreign technology and enhances strategic autonomy. It also promotes innovation in naval engineering and defence production.

Strategic significance

The addition of INS Sanshodhak strengthens India’s maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Accurate hydrographic data is vital for both military operations and international maritime cooperation.

With increasing geopolitical importance of sea routes, such vessels ensure better surveillance and operational readiness. India continues to modernize its navy to address emerging challenges.
