IndiGo Hits Global Milestone with 134.9 Million Seats in 2024
IndiGo Becomes World’s Second Fastest-Growing Airline in Seat Capacity: India’s aviation frontrunner IndiGo Airlines has secured the second position globally in seat capacity growth, registering a 10.1% year-on-year increase in 2024, according to OAG (Official Airline Guide). With 134.9 million seats, it stands just behind Qatar Airways, which grew at 10.4%. This milestone reflects IndiGo’s growing influence not just domestically but in the global aviation market.
IndiGo Tops Global Charts in Flight Frequency Growth
Even though it came second in seat capacity, IndiGo clinched the number one spot worldwide for flight frequency. The airline operated 749,156 flights in 2024, marking a 9.7% increase over the previous year. This growth cements IndiGo’s position as the most frequent flyer among global carriers, reflecting its dominance on Indian routes and strong connectivity to nearby international destinations.
900+ Aircraft Orders Drive IndiGo’s Expansion Plans
Fueling its rapid expansion, IndiGo has over 900 aircraft on order, one of the largest pending orders in global aviation. In 2024 alone, the airline received 58 new Airbus aircraft—the highest delivery count for any carrier globally. Despite this, around 80 planes remain grounded due to ongoing supply chain issues affecting maintenance and overhaul services. The growing fleet underpins the airline’s strategy to capture regional markets and prepare for long-haul operations.
Financial Performance Remains Resilient Amid Rising Costs
In Q3 FY2024–25, IndiGo posted a net profit of ₹2,449 crore, even with an 18% drop from the previous year due to increased operational expenses. Operational revenue grew by 14% to ₹22,111 crore, and total income reached ₹22,992.8 crore, up 14.6%. Despite cost pressures, IndiGo’s load factor rose to 86.9%, indicating strong demand and efficient fleet utilisation.
IndiGo Eyes Long-Haul Future with Low-Cost International Model
While 88% of IndiGo’s capacity remains domestic, the airline is preparing to launch long-haul international operations in 2025. Using a wet lease model—leasing aircraft with crew—it plans to serve new international routes cost-effectively. This strategy follows the global trend of low-cost long-haul connectivity, making air travel more affordable for long-distance flyers.
