India’s Position in the Index
India’s Rise in the Asia Power Index 2025: India secured the third position in the Asia Power Index 2025, reflecting its expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific. The assessment, released by Australia’s Lowy Institute, places India behind the United States and China, indicating its growing ability to shape regional outcomes. The ranking demonstrates measurable improvements across economic, military and diplomatic indicators.
What the Index Measures
The Index evaluates 27 regional countries and territories using 131 indicators, making it one of the most detailed assessments of power in Asia. Its eight pillars include Military Capability, Economic Capability, Defence Networks, Diplomatic Influence, Cultural Influence, Resilience, and Future Resources. These categories collectively capture a nation’s ability to project power beyond borders.
Static GK fact: The Lowy Institute is an independent international policy think tank based in Sydney, Australia, established in 2003.
India’s Improved Score
India attained a score of 40/100, showing a 2% improvement over the previous edition. This placed India for the first time in the Index’s “major power” classification. The rise is attributed to India’s strong post-pandemic economic recovery, enhanced geopolitical relevance and improved leverage in regional diplomacy.
Static GK Tip: India’s GDP is the fifth largest globally, contributing to its rising strategic weight.
Comparison with Global and Regional Players
The United States remains Asia’s strongest power with a score of 81.7, maintaining a considerable lead. China follows with 73.7, narrowing its gap with the US but still short of overtaking. India stands distinctly ahead of other South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, although a significant gap persists between India and China.
Russia displayed renewed momentum due to deeper cooperation with China and North Korea, while countries like Japan and Australia recorded mixed performance in various indicators.
India’s Strategic Consolidation
India’s growing economic strength, expanding defence partnerships, and active diplomatic outreach underpin its rising position. Initiatives in technology, connectivity and global partnerships have strengthened India’s long-term prospects in the Indo-Pacific. The Index suggests India will continue shaping regional stability through sustained engagement.
Static GK fact: India is a founding member of key regional groupings such as SAARC and BIMSTEC, reinforcing its neighbourhood influence.
