India’s Global Solar Revolution at ISA 2025

India Leads the Solar Transition

India’s Global Solar Revolution at ISA 2025: At the Eighth International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly held on October 28, 2025, in New Delhi, India unveiled a historic set of global initiatives that mark a new phase in solar diplomacy. The launch of SUNRISE, OSOWOG, Global Capability Centre (GCC), ISA Academy, and the SIDS Procurement Platform reflects India’s leadership in advancing clean energy and sustainable growth.

Static GK fact: The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was founded in 2015 under the Paris Agreement, co-initiated by India and France, with its headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana.

SUNRISE Turning Waste into Wealth

The SUNRISE initiative, or Solar Upcycling Network for Recycling, Innovation & Stakeholder Engagement, focuses on transforming solar waste into economic opportunity. As the solar industry grows, managing end-of-life solar panels has become a critical challenge.

SUNRISE promotes circular economy practices, encouraging upcycling, green manufacturing, and job creation in sustainable sectors. It also helps countries develop solar waste policies to ensure long-term sustainability.

Static GK Tip: India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with solar energy contributing nearly 280 GW.

OSOWOG One Sun One World One Grid

India’s visionary OSOWOG initiative envisions a global solar electricity grid interconnecting continents such as Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. This interconnected system will enable countries to share solar energy across time zones, ensuring 24/7 clean power availability.

By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering costs through cross-border energy trade, OSOWOG positions India at the heart of global energy cooperation.

Static GK fact: The concept of OSOWOG was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2018 ISA Assembly.

GCC and ISA Academy Empowering Global Solar Innovation

The Global Capability Centre (GCC) serves as a global hub for solar R&D, innovation, and startup incubation, driving advancements in AI, digital monitoring, and efficiency. Alongside it, the ISA Academy introduces AI-based personalised solar training, providing learners worldwide with tailored knowledge and skills.

Together, these initiatives aim to make India the “Silicon Valley for Solar”, fostering technological excellence and workforce development in the renewable energy sector.

SIDS Procurement Platform Supporting Vulnerable Nations

The SIDS Procurement Platform, co-developed with the World Bank, supports Small Island Developing States (SIDS) by ensuring low-cost, climate-resilient solar systems. Sixteen island nations have already signed an in-principle MoU to participate in this cooperative solar mechanism.

This initiative will help SIDS overcome energy insecurity, high import costs, and climate-related vulnerabilities, particularly across the Caribbean, Pacific, and Indian Ocean regions.

Static GK fact: India’s partnership with SIDS aligns with its commitment to Climate Justice and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy).

India’s Expanding Global Solar Influence

The 2025 Assembly reaffirmed ISA’s growing strength, now comprising 125 member nations. Under India’s leadership, the alliance is evolving from a platform for policy coordination into a global ecosystem for solar research, capacity building, and equitable energy access.

President Droupadi Murmu’s call for a “people-first solar revolution” emphasized inclusivity and justice in the energy transition, strengthening India’s image as a responsible global power in clean energy diplomacy.
