Sanctuary dedicated to butterflies
India’s First Butterfly Sanctuary Declared in Kerala: India has taken a unique step in wildlife conservation by launching its first butterfly-exclusive sanctuary in Kerala’s Aralam forest. This is not just a renaming exercise. It represents 25 years of focused conservation, research, and community awareness. Located in the lush Western Ghats, the newly named Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary stands out as a special forest zone created only for butterflies.
A new identity for Aralam
The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, originally declared in 1984, has now been renamed to reflect its new focus. With this change, it becomes the first sanctuary in India exclusively dedicated to butterflies. Spread across 55 sq. km, the sanctuary is situated in Kannur district, one of the key biodiversity hotspots of India. This area is rich in tropical and semi-evergreen forests, making it an ideal breeding ground for butterflies.
Rich in butterfly life
The sanctuary houses over 266 butterfly species, making up more than 80% of Kerala’s butterfly population. Among them are rare species like the Common Albatross and several Danaine butterflies. Some of these are endemic to the region and are rarely seen elsewhere. The best time to witness their presence is during the peak migration season between December and February.
Conservation backed by research
The transformation of Aralam is rooted in serious research. For over two decades, annual butterfly surveys have been carried out in collaboration with the Malabar Natural History Society. These surveys revealed that Aralam holds not just high species diversity but also serves as a key migration corridor. Every year, researchers and tourists gather here for the Butterfly Migration Study, held during early January or February.
Why it matters?
Creating this sanctuary helps protect endangered butterfly species and improves ecological balance. Butterflies are key pollinators and their presence indicates a healthy environment. The recognition of Aralam as a butterfly sanctuary will likely open new funding channels, encourage eco-tourism, and inspire similar conservation models across India.
