Tamil Nadu leads in factory presence

India’s Factory Hub Tamil Nadu: The Annual Survey of Industries 2023–2024, published on August 27, 2025, confirmed Tamil Nadu as the state with the highest number of factories in India. Out of a total of 2,60,061 factories, the state held a commanding 15.43% share, securing its position as the country’s foremost manufacturing hub.

Major contributor to employment

Factories across India provided jobs to more than 1.95 crore workers. Tamil Nadu alone accounted for 15.24% of this workforce, placing it ahead of all other states. Gujarat followed with 13.07%, while Maharashtra stood close with 12.95%. Uttar Pradesh (8.30%) and Karnataka (6.29%) were also significant contributors to industrial employment.

Other leading industrial states

Behind Tamil Nadu, Gujarat secured 12.81% of total factories, while Maharashtra recorded 10.20%. Uttar Pradesh at 8.51% and Andhra Pradesh with 6.16% completed the top five. These states together represent India’s most vital centers of industrial growth.
