India’s Breakthrough in Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet Technology: Defence Research and Development Organisation (Defence Research and Development Organisation) successfully demonstrated Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology on February 3, 2026, from the Chandipur coast in Odisha. This achievement places India among a select group of nations possessing advanced air-breathing propulsion systems for long-range missiles.
The successful test is a major milestone in indigenous missile propulsion. It directly strengthens India’s capability to develop next-generation long-range air-to-air missiles for the Indian Air Force.
Understanding solid fuel ducted ramjet
SFDR is an advanced air-breathing propulsion system designed for high-speed combat missiles. Unlike conventional rocket motors that burn fuel rapidly, SFDR enables controlled combustion of solid fuel using atmospheric oxygen.
This design allows sustained thrust over a longer duration. As a result, missiles retain high speed and manoeuvrability even at extended ranges, which is critical in modern aerial combat.

Key test features and performance
During the test, the missile was initially accelerated by a ground booster motor to achieve the required Mach number. After booster separation, the SFDR motor, nozzle-less booster, and fuel flow control system functioned as designed.
The missile’s flight was continuously monitored using advanced tracking instruments deployed along the Bay of Bengal coast. Real-time data collected at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur validated the system’s efficiency and stability.
DRDO laboratories involved
The test was conducted under the supervision of senior scientists from multiple DRDO laboratories. Key contributors included Defence Research & Development Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Research Centre Imarat, and the Integrated Test Range.
This multi-lab coordination reflects India’s growing strength in systems integration and propulsion engineering. It also highlights the maturity of indigenous defence research infrastructure.
