India Tops Global Chart in Domestic Air Travel Efficiency: India has clinched the number one position worldwide in terms of domestic passenger load factor (PLF) for 2024, as reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Posting a PLF of 86.4%, India overtook leading aviation markets including the United States (84.1%) and China (83.2%), demonstrating superior seat utilization and robust demand in the domestic flying segment. With over 16.3 crore passengers flying within India last year, the country reinforced its growing status as a central figure in global aviation.

What is PLF and Why Does It Matter?

Passenger Load Factor (PLF) gauges how efficiently an airline fills available seats. It’s calculated as a ratio of revenue-generating passengers to the total seat capacity offered. A higher PLF means better profitability, optimized flight operations, and strong consumer appetite for air travel. India’s record-setting PLF underscores efficient fleet deployment, strong passenger volumes, and growing accessibility of air travel to its population.

India’s Position in the Global Aviation Landscape

With a domestic PLF of 86.4%, India outperformed several aviation-heavy nations. The United States held the second spot at 84.1%, followed by China at 83.2%. Other notable countries included Brazil (81.9%), Australia (81.8%), and Japan (78%). These rankings highlight how post-pandemic recovery is being led by countries with large domestic networks.

Global Aviation Sees Significant Bounce-Back

The aviation sector globally rebounded strongly in 2024, with total passenger traffic up by 10.4% from 2023 levels. International travel saw a 13.6% increase, driven by revived tourism and business activity. Airlines also boosted seat capacity by 8.7%, contributing to a global average PLF of 83.5%—a new record. December 2024 alone posted a PLF of 84%, the highest December load factor ever recorded.

IATA’s Outlook for 2025

IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, described 2024 as a milestone year for the airline industry, noting strong demand and improved capacity planning across global carriers. For 2025, IATA predicts an 8% growth in global air travel, reflecting a return to pre-pandemic growth trends. Walsh also emphasized aviation’s crucial role in job creation, economic development, and international connectivity.

India’s lead in PLF is more than a statistical success—it signals deep structural improvements in the country’s civil aviation system. Continued investments in regional connectivity through schemes like UDAN, modern airport infrastructure, and private sector participation have transformed flying into a mainstream travel option for millions. With increased air traffic, India is positioning itself as a hub of affordable, efficient, and widespread domestic air mobility.
