India Launches the First Franchise Based Road Cycling League: India has introduced the Cycling League of India (CLI), the world’s first professional franchise-based road cycling league. The official logo of the league was unveiled by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya.
The initiative aims to create a structured professional platform for cyclists in India while improving the country’s presence in global competitive cycling. The minister described the league as a “watershed moment for Indian cycling”, highlighting its importance for the development of the sport.
Structure of the Cycling League of India
The Cycling League of India will follow a franchise-based model similar to other professional sports leagues. This format is designed to attract investors, create city-based fan engagement, and develop professional cycling infrastructure.
The league will feature eight city or region-based franchises. Each team will consist of 10 cyclists, combining international experience and emerging Indian talent.
Team composition will include two international cyclists, two junior riders, and six professional Indian cyclists. This structure ensures international exposure while simultaneously nurturing young domestic athletes.

Competition Format of the League

With strong encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the movement has evolved into a nationwide campaign promoting fitness, active living, and community engagement.
The Cycling League of India is expected to strengthen this momentum by building a professional sports ecosystem while inspiring more young athletes to pursue cycling as a career.
