India Launches the First Franchise Based Road Cycling League

Launch of a New Era in Indian Cycling

India Launches the First Franchise Based Road Cycling League: India has introduced the Cycling League of India (CLI), the world’s first professional franchise-based road cycling league. The official logo of the league was unveiled by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya.

The initiative aims to create a structured professional platform for cyclists in India while improving the country’s presence in global competitive cycling. The minister described the league as a “watershed moment for Indian cycling”, highlighting its importance for the development of the sport.

Structure of the Cycling League of India

The Cycling League of India will follow a franchise-based model similar to other professional sports leagues. This format is designed to attract investors, create city-based fan engagement, and develop professional cycling infrastructure.

The league will feature eight city or region-based franchises. Each team will consist of 10 cyclists, combining international experience and emerging Indian talent.

Team composition will include two international cyclists, two junior riders, and six professional Indian cyclists. This structure ensures international exposure while simultaneously nurturing young domestic athletes.

Static GK fact: India established the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) in 1946, which governs competitive cycling events and promotes the sport at the national level.

Competition Format of the League

The Cycling League of India will feature multiple racing formats to maintain excitement and competitive balance. The league will be conducted in three stages, eventually leading to a grand finale.

The races will include criterium races, which are short circuit road races conducted in urban areas. These events are known for their high-speed action and spectator appeal.

Another format will be the team time trial, where teams compete against the clock collectively. The league will also include mass start races, where all riders start simultaneously and the first cyclist to cross the finish line wins.

These formats ensure both strategic competition and spectator-friendly racing, which are essential for developing a strong sports league.

Static GK Tip: Road cycling has been part of the Olympic Games since 1896, making it one of the oldest Olympic sports.

Rising Popularity of Cycling in India

Cycling events have gained increasing popularity in India in recent years. The Pune Grand Tour, a major cycling event, attracted nearly 2.5 million spectators.

The event generated around ₹144 million in public relations value, indicating growing public interest in cycling. It has also received recognition from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global governing body for cycling.

Such developments demonstrate India’s potential to emerge as a global destination for professional cycling competitions.

Static GK fact: The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), founded in 1900 and headquartered in Aigle, Switzerland, regulates international cycling competitions worldwide.

Fit India Movement and Cycling Culture

The league also complements the objectives of the Fit India Movement, which promotes healthy lifestyles and mass participation in sports. Cycling has become one of the central activities encouraged under this initiative.

A major campaign titled Fit India Sundays on Cycle, launched in December 2024, has played a significant role in popularizing cycling among citizens.

The campaign has witnessed participation from over 25 lakh people and has been conducted in more than 2.5 lakh locations across India. More than 63 editions of the weekly cycling event have already been organised.

With strong encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the movement has evolved into a nationwide campaign promoting fitness, active living, and community engagement.

The Cycling League of India is expected to strengthen this momentum by building a professional sports ecosystem while inspiring more young athletes to pursue cycling as a career.
