India Joins Top Five in Global Aviation Rankings: India has reached a major milestone by becoming the world’s 5th largest aviation market in 2024. As per the latest World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), India handled 241 million air travelers, marking an 11.1% increase compared to the previous year.
This remarkable performance pushed India ahead of Japan, which recorded 205 million passengers. India now follows only the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and Spain in total air passenger volume.
Busy skies over Mumbai and Delhi
The Mumbai to Delhi air corridor has emerged as a major player on the global stage. In 2024, it ranked 7th among the world’s busiest domestic routes, handling 5.9 million passengers. Most of the top routes globally are concentrated in the Asia Pacific region.

Premium travel demand accelerates
India is witnessing a growing interest in premium flight classes. In 2024, travel in business and first class grew by 11.8%, slightly higher than the 11.5% growth in economy class. Worldwide, 116.9 million international passengers opted for premium seating, which now accounts for 6% of global international travel.
This trend indicates stronger demand for comfort and corporate travel experiences among Indian flyers.
Asia Pacific leads in high-value passengers
The Asia Pacific aviation region posted a strong 22.8% surge in premium class traffic, reaching 21 million passengers. Meanwhile, Europe remains the biggest premium segment globally with 39.3 million passengers, while the Middle East holds the highest share of premium travelers at 14.7%.

Indian airport earns global praise
Adding to India’s growing aviation recognition, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport earned a spot in the Top 10 Global Airports in a ranking published by Travel + Leisure. This reflects significant progress in airport quality, services, and global appeal.
