India expanding global trade partnerships
India Export Momentum Through New Trade Agreements: India has significantly expanded its trade outreach by concluding nine Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 38 countries in the last three years. These agreements provide zero-duty market access to nearly 70% of global GDP, strengthening India’s role in international trade.
The move reflects India’s strategy to diversify export destinations and reduce dependence on a few markets. As a result, cumulative exports reached USD 720.76 billion during April–January 2025-26, recording a 6.15% year-on-year growth.

Rising strength of India’s export sectors
Several sectors have played a crucial role in boosting India’s export performance. Electronic goods have emerged as the third-largest export category, supported by strong manufacturing growth. India has also become the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, highlighting the success of domestic production policies.
The petroleum products sector continues to be a major contributor, with India ranking as the seventh-largest global exporter of refined petroleum. The country’s large refining capacity allows it to export petroleum to several regions across Asia and Africa.
India’s pharmaceutical industry continues to reinforce its global reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World.” The country ranks third in pharmaceutical production by volume and eleventh by value, supplying affordable medicines worldwide.

Contribution of manufacturing and defence exports
The automobile and textile sectors remain key pillars of India’s export economy. The automobile industry alone generates employment for more than 30 million people directly and indirectly. Meanwhile, India’s textile industry holds the sixth-largest global export share.
India’s defence exports have also grown rapidly. The country now exports defence equipment to over 100 nations and achieved exports worth ₹23,622 crore in FY25. This reflects India’s growing capability in indigenous defence manufacturing.

Institutional mechanisms supporting exporters
To strengthen export capacity, the government launched the Export Promotion Mission (EPM) with an outlay of ₹25,060 crore for FY26–FY31. The mission focuses on supporting MSMEs and first-time exporters through initiatives such as Niryat Protsahan and Niryat Disha.
Logistics initiatives such as FLOW (Freight and Logistics Optimisation Works) and LIFT (Logistics Improvement for Freight Transport) support overseas warehousing and reduce freight disadvantages in low-export districts.
The TRACE initiative reimburses exporters for international testing, inspection, and certification costs, helping Indian products meet global standards.

Technology and manufacturing push
India is also strengthening domestic manufacturing through multiple policy initiatives. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes support industries such as automobiles, bulk drugs, and medical devices, aiming to reduce import dependence.
Advanced technology manufacturing is promoted through the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 and the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) worth ₹40,000 crore. Meanwhile, the ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE scheme supports electric mobility and innovation in the EV sector.
These initiatives collectively enhance India’s export competitiveness while supporting the goal of self-reliant manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
