Growing importance of drones
India Emerging as Global Hub for Indigenous Drone Manufacturing: The Defence Minister of India emphasized that drones and counter-drone technologies will define future warfare. Modern conflicts increasingly rely on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for strategic operations. India aims to build a strong indigenous drone manufacturing ecosystem to ensure strategic autonomy.
Drones reduce risks to soldiers and enhance operational efficiency. Their use has expanded from surveillance to active combat roles in recent conflicts.
Static GK fact: India’s premier defence research body is the DRDO, established in 1958.
Role of drones in modern warfare
Drones play a critical role in real-time surveillance by providing high-resolution imagery of enemy positions. This enables better planning without exposing troops to danger.
They are also used for suppression of enemy air defences, as seen in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where Shahed drones overwhelmed systems. Additionally, drones enable low-cost warfare, demonstrated by Ukraine’s Operation Spider Web.
Advanced drones are equipped for electronic warfare, capable of jamming radar and disrupting communication networks.
Government initiatives for drone ecosystem
India has launched several initiatives to boost domestic drone production. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme promotes local manufacturing of drones and components.
The government imposed an import ban on drones in CBU, SKD, and CKD forms to encourage indigenous production. This move supports domestic industries and reduces dependency on foreign suppliers.
GST on drones was reduced to 5% in 2025, making them more affordable for businesses and startups.
Static GK Tip: GST (Goods and Services Tax) was implemented in India on 1 July 2017.
Promotion and skill development
Platforms like Bharat Drone Shakti, Bharat Drone Mahotsav, and the Drone International Expo promote innovation and attract investments. These events encourage startups to adopt Drone-as-a-Service (DaaS) models.
The SwaYaan programme focuses on building skilled manpower in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). It aims to create a trained workforce for research, manufacturing, and operations.
Strategic and economic significance
Developing a strong drone ecosystem will enhance India’s defence preparedness and reduce reliance on imports. It will also create opportunities in sectors like agriculture, logistics, and disaster management.
India’s push towards indigenous drones aligns with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. It strengthens both national security and economic growth.
