Diplomatic Reset Between India and Canada
India Canada Strategic Energy Partnership Reset: In March 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a Joint Leaders Statement to reset bilateral relations. The announcement came during Carney’s official visit to India and coincided with 79 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The roadmap focuses on cooperation in energy, trade, technology, education, defence and Indo-Pacific security. The leaders adopted the principle “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future” as the guiding vision for strengthening long-term ties.

Strategic Energy Partnership
A major outcome of the visit was the launch of the India–Canada Strategic Energy Partnership. The partnership aims to enhance cooperation in clean energy, conventional fuels, civil nuclear power and critical minerals.
The Canada–India Ministerial Energy Dialogue was relaunched during India Energy Week 2026. Both countries agreed to collaborate on green hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, battery storage and carbon capture technologies (CCUS).
A landmark agreement was the CAD 2.6 billion uranium supply deal signed between Cameco Corporation and India’s Department of Atomic Energy. This deal will strengthen India’s civil nuclear power generation capacity.

Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Cooperation
India and Canada also signed a Critical Minerals Cooperation MoU to strengthen supply chains for minerals essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy and electronics. The agreement aligns with the G7 Critical Minerals Action Plan.
Another agreement focused on clean energy collaboration covering solar power, wind energy, bioenergy and energy storage technologies. India welcomed Canada’s interest in joining the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which promotes global solar deployment.

CEPA Trade Negotiations
The two leaders formally launched negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The agreement aims to significantly boost economic engagement between both countries.
The target is to increase bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion (₹4.65 lakh crore) by 2030. Both governments expressed commitment to conclude CEPA negotiations by the end of 2026.
To support economic cooperation, the India-Canada CEO Forum will be reconstituted and the Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment revived.

Talent Mobility and Educational Cooperation
Education and mobility remain central pillars of India-Canada relations. Both countries agreed to expand dual degree programs, twinning initiatives and offshore university campuses.
An important agreement was signed between AICTE and MITACS, enabling 300 Indian students annually to participate in research collaborations. Canada will also offer Indo-Pacific scholarships for over 85 researchers.
These initiatives are part of a Joint Talent and Innovation Strategy aimed at strengthening research and academic exchanges.
Technology and Security Cooperation
The two countries also expanded collaboration in space technology, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. Cooperation between ISRO and the Canadian Space Agency will focus on AI applications in space missions and medical diagnostics.
In defence and security, the leaders agreed to institutionalize an India-Canada Defence Dialogue. Cooperation will include maritime security, counterterrorism and cybersecurity.
India also welcomed Canada’s interest in joining the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) as a dialogue partner, reinforcing support for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
