India at Fourth Coast Guard Global Summit in Rome: India participated in the 4th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) held in Rome, Italy, on 11–12 September 2025. The two-member Indian Coast Guard (ICG) delegation was led by Director General Paramesh Sivamani. India also announced its bid to host the 5th CGGS in 2027, highlighting its commitment to global maritime cooperation.

Lecture delivered by India
The ICG delegation presented a lecture titled “Guardians Against the Blaze: ICG’s Tactical Response to Fire Emergencies.” It showcased India’s expertise in handling fire-related incidents at sea and stressed its constructive role in maritime safety. The participation reaffirmed India’s vision of being a responsible maritime partner.
Themes of the Rome summit
The Rome summit, co-chaired by Italy and Japan, brought together delegates from 115 countries and global organisations. Discussions focused on maritime safety, emergency response, law enforcement at sea, and capacity building.
Key themes included tackling oil spills, marine pollution, piracy, and illegal fishing, while also exploring digital tools for maritime surveillance.

Global significance of CGGS
The Coast Guard Global Summit was first convened in 2017 by the Japan Coast Guard and the Nippon Foundation. At the 2025 edition, leaders such as Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba stressed the urgency of cooperation in marine pollution response and search-and-rescue operations.
India’s bid for 2027
India’s announcement to host the 5th CGGS in 2027 marked a key moment in its maritime diplomacy. If successful, the hosting would:
- Enhance India’s image as a Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
- Provide a platform to project its blue economy strategies and climate resilience initiatives.
- Reinforce India’s leadership in regional maritime security.
