India Achieves Second Spot in Global Fisheries Output

India’s rise in global fish production

India Achieves Second Spot in Global Fisheries Output: India has climbed to the second position globally in total fish output, marking a major milestone in the fisheries sector. This announcement was made by Union Minister of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Rajiv Ranjan Singh during a key meeting in Kolkata with officials from eastern states.

Rapid growth in fish output

India’s fish production witnessed an impressive 103% increase in the financial year 2024–25, compared to figures from 2013–14. This significant jump reflects the combined impact of targeted policy measures and active participation from the aquaculture and inland fisheries sectors.

West Bengal emerged as a major contributor due to its vast network of water bodies, along with states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.

Government interventions powering the sector

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) continues to be a game-changer by promoting scientific fishing, cold chain development, and sustainable practices. The scheme has enabled infrastructure upgrades and created new livelihoods in the fisheries ecosystem.

Access to institutional credit through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) has also benefited small and marginal fishers, allowing them to invest in feed, hatcheries, and technological upgrades.

Static GK fact: The PMMSY was launched in May 2020, with a vision to increase fish production to 22 million tonnes by 2024–25.

Strengthening eastern India’s fish economy

By involving multiple states from eastern India, the central government is pushing for decentralized fishery development. The goal is to unlock regional potential by improving usage of ponds, tanks, rivers, and reservoirs to increase yield and promote economic self-reliance.

Static GK fact: India’s inland fisheries sector contributes over 65% of the country’s total fish production, highlighting the importance of freshwater aquaculture.

Role in national development goals

The rise in fish production supports the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat, providing income support to rural families and enhancing nutritional security. It also aligns with global sustainable development targets.

Static GK tip: India is the top exporter of frozen shrimp and among the top three aquaculture producers worldwide.
