Collaboration for Future Sustainability Skills
IIT Bombay Honeywell Sustainability Skills Hub Initiative: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has partnered with global technology company Honeywell to establish a new Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation at its Powai campus in Mumbai. This initiative focuses on training students in sustainability related technologies and environmental innovation.
The programme aims to train over 100,000 students by the year 2030 through certificate programmes, advanced research and strong industry academia collaboration. The centre will be officially known as the IIT Bombay Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation.
Static GK fact: IIT Bombay was established in 1958 and is recognized as one of the Institutes of National Importance in India under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
Focus on Green Innovation and Environmental Technology
The newly established Centre of Excellence (CoE) will act as a knowledge hub for developing advanced expertise in sustainability, environmental technology and green innovation. The objective is to equip students with skills required to tackle global environmental challenges such as climate change, resource management and energy transition.
Funding support for this initiative comes from the Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of Honeywell in India. Through this support, the centre will promote innovation that aligns with the growing global focus on sustainable development and green economy transformation.
Static GK Tip: Honeywell International Inc. is a multinational technology company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, known for its contributions in aerospace, automation and energy technologies.
Certificate Programmes and Industry-Oriented Learning
The centre will introduce certificate-based academic programmes that combine theoretical knowledge with practical field experience. These courses will be open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students from across India.
Students enrolled in the programme will participate in real world sustainability projects, allowing them to gain hands-on exposure to environmental challenges and policy solutions. This approach ensures that learners develop both technical competence and industry relevant expertise.
The initiative will also support advanced laboratory infrastructure, modern equipment procurement, curriculum development and research grants to strengthen sustainability education and innovation at IIT Bombay.
Key Learning Tracks for the Green Economy
The academic curriculum of the centre will focus on five major learning tracks designed to prepare students for the emerging green economy and sustainable development sectors.
These tracks include sustainability reporting, sustainable finance, energy security, sustainable infrastructure and policy advocacy. Each track addresses critical aspects of environmental governance and sustainable economic development.
By focusing on these areas, the programme aims to build a workforce capable of designing sustainable policies, financial models and technological solutions required for long-term environmental resilience.
Static GK fact: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, covering 17 global goals related to economic, social and environmental sustainability.
Pilot Phase and Training Targets
The initiative will begin with a pilot phase before expanding into a large-scale national training programme. During the first two months, the centre will develop infrastructure and design specialized course modules.
The pilot stage will train an initial batch of around 250 students, who will participate in the first set of sustainability training programmes. Based on the results of the pilot phase, the initiative will gradually scale up to reach its target of 100,000 trained students by 2030.
This collaboration highlights the growing role of academic institutions and global technology companies in building sustainability driven innovation ecosystems in India.
