Lok Sabha approval
IIM Guwahati to Boost Higher Education in Northeast India: The Lok Sabha has cleared the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2025, paving the way for the creation of IIM Guwahati. The institution will be developed with a central grant of ₹550 crore, making it a landmark investment in higher education for the Northeast region.
Provisions of the bill
The Bill modifies the IIM Act 2017 to add Guwahati to the official list of Indian Institutes of Management. The funding will support infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and research facilities. This step addresses the long-pending regional demand for a premier management institute in Assam.
Static GK fact: The original IIM Act was passed in 2017, giving IIMs greater autonomy and the power to grant degrees.
Strategic importance of Guwahati
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted Guwahati’s significance as a major educational and economic hub of the Northeast. The new IIM will expand access to quality management education, support regional aspirations, and enhance India’s inclusive growth agenda.
Static GK Tip: Guwahati is the largest city in Assam and hosts institutions like IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, and the Indian Statistical Institute campus.
Expanding the IIM network
India currently has 21 operational IIMs. They are recognized globally for excellence in management education and attract talent from across the world. With the addition of IIM Guwahati, the government strengthens the IIM brand further.
India is also moving towards internationalization of higher education, with an upcoming IIM Dubai campus planned for launch next month.
Political backdrop
The Bill was passed without debate due to disruptions in the Lok Sabha over the SIR issue, but it still gained approval. This reflects broad consensus on strengthening education, even amid political contestation.
Static GK fact: The first IIM was established in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1961, followed by IIM Ahmedabad the same year.
Educational and regional impact
The setting up of IIM Guwahati is expected to:

- Promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and research
- Attract investment and skilled workforce to the region
This expansion integrates the Northeast more closely into India’s premier academic framework and boosts opportunities for future leaders.
