Event Overview
Him-CONNECT 2026 Advancing Himalayan Climate Innovation: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will organise Him-CONNECT on the sidelines of the World Sustainable Development Summit 2026 in New Delhi from 25 to 27 February 2026. The event will be open to visitors on 26 and 27 February.
Him-CONNECT is designed as a collaborative platform. It connects researchers from the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) with startups, investors and policymakers to scale climate-focused innovations.
Static GK fact: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was formed in 1985 and functions under the Government of India to implement environmental policies and international climate commitments.
Focus on Himalayan Sustainability
The event will showcase more than 24 technologies, prototypes, patents and pilot projects developed under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS). These innovations directly address ecological fragility in Himalayan states.
The themes include water security, climate adaptation, waste-to-wealth models, sustainable construction, renewable energy and nature-based livelihoods. The objective is to transform research into scalable solutions.
Static GK fact: The Indian Himalayan Region covers 11 states and Union Territories, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
Participating Institutions
Innovations come from premier institutions such as IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Jammu, IIT Ropar and IIT Mandi. Research bodies like CSIR-CRRI and CSIR-IHBT are also participating.
Other contributors include Central Agricultural University Imphal, NIT Silchar, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, SKUAST-K, University of Kashmir, TERI Guwahati, Kumaon University, and the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment.
Over 100 startups, incubators, investors and policymakers are expected to take part, enhancing public-private-academic partnerships.
Static GK Tip: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was established in 1942 and is one of India’s largest research and development networks.
Key Innovations on Display
Several practical solutions will be presented. These include eco-friendly road construction techniques suitable for mountainous terrain and treated wastewater for hydroponic farming.
Other notable innovations are sericulture waste-based burn ointments, low-cost mineralised water purifiers and pine needle-based wastewater treatment systems. Technologies for decentralised wastewater reuse and yak milk cottage cheese processing will also be showcased.
These innovations aim to promote climate-resilient infrastructure and improve livelihoods in high-altitude regions.
Strategic Importance
The Indian Himalayan Region acts as a major climate regulator for Asia and is the source of key river systems such as the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus. It supports millions of people downstream.
Him-CONNECT seeks to align science with finance and policy. It promotes green growth, commercialisation of research and enhanced cooperation among mountain regions.
The initiative reflects India’s commitment to solution-oriented climate leadership and sustainable development pathways in ecologically sensitive zones.
